The Fear of God or the Fear of Man

Scripture:

I Samuel 15:24 "I have sinned, for I have transgressed the commandment of the Lord and your words, because I feared the people and obeyed their voice".

Observation:

Saul has grieved the heart of God and is being rejected as the king of Israel. He did not fully obey the Lord and in this passage we see why. It says that Saul feared the people and obeyed their voice. He lost his Kingdom because he was more interested in pleasing people than pleasing God.

Application:

Most people get into sin because they are trying to please people. Fearing man and what man thinks causes young people to sin instead of doing what they know is right because they want their friends to like them. Fearing man causes church leaders to do what the people want instead of what God ha given them to do. Politicians are more concerned about pleasing people than about doing what is right. We live in a world that is influenced so strongly by what the people want and think. We must concentrate on what God wants for us more than what others say about us.

Prayer:

Lord, as they prayed in Acts, grant us boldness that we would not be ashamed of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Help us be confident in Your word and not be swayed by the opinions of man. Teach us to rely on You instead of the voice of the crowd. Saul listened to what man had to say and his kingdom was taken from him. May we always listen and obey the voice of the Lord.

Your Son,
Jeff
