Doing More than Enough

Scripture:

II Kings 13:19 "And the man of God was angry with him, and said, 'you should have struck five or six times; then you would have struck Syria till you had destroyed it! But now you will strike Syria only three times'".

Observation:

The king wanted to know from the prophet whether or not he could defeat Syria in battle. The prophet says to him "take these arrows and strike the ground with them". He didn't say how many times to strike the ground, yet when the conversation is over, the King is told that because he only struck the ground three times instead of more, he would only strike Syria three times. Basically he would strike once for each time he struck the arrows on the ground. This seems unfair, but God was testing to see how passionate he was about defeating his enemy.

Application:

Sometimes we give up way too easily. God may want us to wrestle and fight with some things and we give up too easily. God is looking for passionate people who will go hard after Him and do everything they do, with all their heart. It seems like nothing to strike and arrow on the ground three times instead of ten, but God wants to know we are going to go over and above the call of duty. One strike would have been obedience, but God really wanted him to go much harder. We can't give up too easily.

Prayer:

Lord, help me go all the way and be passionate for you. Let me do above the call of duty. Let me go hard after You and see You work through my life.

Love You,
Jeff
