Promises Promises

 Scripture:

““When you make a vow to the Lord your God, be prompt in fulfilling whatever you promised him. For the Lord your God demands that you promptly fulfill all your vows, or you will be guilty of sin.” ‭‭Deuteronomy‬ ‭23‬:‭21‬ ‭NLT‬

Observation:

God tells His people here and in the following verses that it is better not to make a vow than to make one and not fulfill it. God takes this very seriously. A vow is really a covenant, and God is always very serious about a covenant. This passage tells us to be prompt in doing what you promised the Lord, because it will be looked at as sin.

Application:

Breaking a vow should be seen as lying. When we make a vow to do something and don’t do it, that makes us a liar. We should let our yes and yes and our no be no. As believers, we should not say that we will do things and then not do them. We should not tell God we will do something and then not follow through. He expects us to fulfill our vows. It is better not to make one than to break one.

Prayer:

God, we all have a tendency to make vows and promises to You, especially when things are not going well for us and we find ourselves in a bad situation. Help me not to say things in an urgent situation that will cause me trouble later. Help me not to make promises I can’t keep. Teach me to refrain from making promises I know I won’t fulfill.

Your Son,

Jeff
